1975 - 1976 Georgia Official Highway Map
1976 AMOCO Georgia Road Map

This red on reflective white plate was issued to Georgians in 1976
Until 1983, it could be updated with tabs
A county sticker is placed at the bottom center
The beginning letter in the Georgia serial number denotes the passenger car's weight class.
Below is a listing of the letters and their weight classes:
In addition, stickers used from 1972 to 1978 also had letters noting the weight class
A and B for up to 3,000 lbs
C for 3,001 to 3,500 lbs
D for 3,501 to 4,000 lbs
E for 4,001 to 6,000 lbs

1976 Georgia passenger plates in the different weight classes with blue county sticker
Blue stickers were used on the 1971 base, and are leftovers from that previous issue

1975 Georgia expiration tabs placed on 1971 plates were valid through April of 1976

76 Georgia sample with 77 sample tab is shown on the left
On the right, is a version with a whiter background and an 81 sample sticker
The whiter background plates are later issues
Below is the SAMPLE version of the 76 Georgia vanity style license plate, and a another type of 76 base sample plate showing the six zeros with separation in the middle

I suspect this 1976 Georgia navy blue on non reflective white license plate is some sort of a prototype or paint test plate

This plate was never issued in 1976, even though it has a 76 embossed on it
The first year of use was 1981 with a 1982 expiration for plates with the Georgia screened into the plate at the top rather than embossed
Why Georgia left the 76 at the top is a good question?

For an extra $10.00, this plate celebrating the Bicentennial could be purchased in 1976, and updated for several years thereafter with tabs.

Sample versions of the 1976 Bicentennial Georgia plate
The one to the left is the earliest version with the whiter one issued later

The TE on the left indicates this is a 1976 Georgia light pick-up truck plate

1976 Georgia straight truck weighing 14,001-18,000 lbs
Prefixes JA to JM indicated this type of truck
The next class was for trucks weighing 18,001 to 24,000 lbs
They are indicated by a JN to JZ prefix
Such trucks included some wreckers, rollbacks and UPS type vans

The AS on the left indicates that this 1976 Georgia plate was used for an auto or house trailer of less than 1,000 lbs., or a farm trailer
These plates used an AA through AZ prefix

1976 Georgia plates with a CA through CZ were used on trailers
These would have been used on a 40 foot semi trailer
Trailers in the CA-CZ and DA-DZ series from 1976 to 1996 were reserved for commercial trailers
They were revalidated with a D sticker from 1972 to 1979, then started receiving a W passenger plate sticker after 1979
Smaller trailers received B stickers from 1972 to 1979 and then an R sticker after 1979
Thanks to Mike Parker of Avondale Estates, Georgia, ALPCA 3989, for the above information

1976 Georgia Governor license plate

Government owned vehicle license plates utilized during 1976 to 1982 in Georgia
The lighter background color and higher number probably means it was a post 1976 issue
Georgia was notorious for keeping the 76 embossed onto newer plates well into the 80's

The XA prefix indicates that this 1976 Georgia license plate issued in Troup County was for a truck and tractor
The plate was used until 1982

1976 Georgia metal booster Bicentennial plate
There is no maker mark on it so I am not sure where it was made
The metal is like the Wilton Armetale boosters you see on similarly made plates in other states

1976 Georgia metal booster plate for the Bicentennial that looks it was made for a wall hanging than a front bumper
There is no maker mark on and small indentations that look like you could drill it for bolt holes
The metal is about 1/4" thick
